Dara's Canine Foundation, Inc. was founded by Lolo Sarnoff, with Dara's help, in 1999. Its purpose was to help promote adoption and fostering programs as an alternative to euthanasia. Lolo Sarnoff, a well-known sculptor, founded and is president of Arts for the Aging, Inc. (AFTA). All dogs deserve a chance. Shelters are overcrowded and don't always have the staff or materials to take care of their charges. Proceeds from the book, Dara: Autobiography of a Chesapeake Bay Retriever go directly to help deserving Humane Societies in the United States. Hopefully, with the earnings of the book, as well as donations, some shelters can build better facilities and hire more staff to walk, love, and teach the dogs to be ready for adoption. It takes work to get an animal to trust again. But it is worth it. "It's terribly important to adopt dogs," Lolo says. "There are so many of them. One can only do one's best. You can't change the world. I'm just trying to change it a teensy bit. I can't save all dogs, but maybe a few." Dara had several plans for future endeavors to enhance the income of her foundation, which she sadly could not fulfill due to her passing away in June 2004 after an extremely long and unusual life. Her final project was "Senior Pets for Seniors," which already exists in Edwards, Illinois and hopefully will become established in all humane societies in the United States.
